Philadelphia schools, Central High School, Julia R. Masterman High School, and William M. Meredith Middle School made history this year by being the first schools from the city to advance to the Science Olympiad state-level competition.

The recent Science Olympiad Regionals tournament took place on March 10th at Penn State Abington where more than 40 schools in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania competed. The students from Division B (6th-8th) and Division C (9th-12th) competed in events that tested their skills in science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering and scientific problem-solving.

In the end, the aforementioned Philly schools placed in the top ten teams within the region. This success qualifies the teams to compete at the state-level Pennsylvania tournament taking place on April 22nd at Penn State Altoona. The teams will compete with other schools from three other Pennsylvania regions to advance to nationals.

The teams have shown a tremendous amount of collaborative spirit and dedication in preparing for test and build events with peers and coaches for competition. “Our group dedicated our time to working in the mornings and staying after school daily. We put in our best effort,” shares Amanda Chen, Vice President of Science Olympiad at Central, “I’m so proud of everyone.” Central’s success was unprecedented by the team as they were competing in regionals for the second time ever.

While only the top two schools at the state tournament will be advancing to the national competition, there will be opportunities for all teams to win individual medals in Science Olympiad events, which the Philly teams hope to achieve.

Philadelphia schools are looking towards a prosperous future in Science Olympiad.

Science Olympiad is a premier nation-wide competition that tests students' knowledge and skills in various scientific fields spanning from science to engineering. Various competitions take place over the course of the school year as students prepare for regional, state, and national-level tournaments.
