A Freshman Perspective on a New Student Selection Process

The new application process in the Philadelphia School District abruptly changed admission for all incoming high schoolers last year. This sudden change deeply affected the results of admission into top Philadelphia magnet schools. Through intervewing and polling current freshman we found that students were able to fit in and find their place in schools despite thoughts and critiscms.

Philadelphia Reacts to the End of Roe v. Wade

On June 24, 2022, protestors gathered at Philadelphia’s City Hall holding signs, some reading, “Abortion is Healthcare” and “I will not go quietly back to the 1950s”. This reversal is not only affecting women’s reproductive rights but also access to contraception. Pennsylvania, like many other states, is facing an uncertain future in abortion healthcare as it relies on the results of the gubernatorial election on November 8.

Juntos’ Fight For Sanctuary Schools in Philadelphia

Even in “sanctuary cities,” or cities where there is not active information sharing between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) , public schools do not always honor the comfort and well-being of their Latinx and immigrant student populations. Juntos is a South Philadelphia-based Latinx immigrant organization dedicated to “fighting for [Latinx] human rights as workers, parents, youth, and immigrants”.
